A tertiary referral center, situated in the south of India, this unit caters to a population of nearly three million.  The unit is a postgraduate training center.  His responsibilities include administration of this fifty bedded craniofacial unit and to run the out patient and inpatient services, conduct postgraduate and undergraduate training and research activities.  The unit is staffed by three consultant Oral & Maxillofacial surgeons and two Plastic surgeons.  Visiting staff includes a Neurosurgeon, Physician and Pediatrician.  This is a busy unit offering a wide range of experience in Maxillofacial trauma, Oral malignancies, Surgery of Cleft lip and palate & Orthognathic Surgery.  The outpatient services and operating facilities are shared between the three consultants who are also second on call.  Since the year 2001 this hospital has been affiliated with The Smile Train to perform free Cleft lip and palate surgeries.  Till date more than 4000 cleft lip and palate surgeries have been performed and three cleft surgeons trained.  Free treatment is also provided for patients with oral malignancies.

As a Project Director of Meenakshi Ammal Cleft & Craniofacial Center, Chennai, he has the responsibility of running this prestigious centre, which is, totally devoted for the complete management of the Cleft and Craniofacial deformity Cases. He has attended numerous conferences in India and overseas. He is an examiner in various universities for BDS and MDS in Oral and maxillofacial surgery.

He has the privilege of being the organizing secretary of the 18th ICOMS held at Bangalore which was a huge success. Right now he is organizing a few other conferences in Bangalore.

His long-term career plan is to pursue as an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon and teach Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery and has a good working knowledge on computers and is familiar with popular software. His other interests include photography and music.

The Final Frontier for the Cranio - Maxillofacial Surgeon"

Dr. David Tauro acquired his basic and postgraduate qualifications incidentally from the Bapuji Institute Davangere. He had a stint at the Center for Burns, Plastic & Maxillofacial Surgery at the St. Lawrence Hospital in South Wales in the United Kingdom. He worked and trained with the internationally acclaimed surgeon Professor Paul Salins for a period of nearly 8 years and also with several other surgeons from India and abroad. He has been on the faculty of several institutions across Karnataka in various capacities.  Besides his academic qualifications he has had extensive training in diverse areas of Maxillofacial Surgery such as Trauma surgery, TMJ Surgery, Orthognathic Surgery, Cleft lip & Palate Surgery, Cancer & Reconstructive Surgery, Rhinoplasty, Facial Aesthetic Surgery and Microvascular Surgery. He has a wealth of experience of 18yrs in the specialty of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery.

He is the recipient of several awards.  Received two state awards from the Mysore University for best performance in the final undergraduate examinations. He is also the recipient of 3 national awards for individual achievements and health services in maxillofacial surgery. He was endowed the prestigious Karnataka State Government Award (Gold Medal & Silver Plaque) in recognition of his exemplary services in Maxillofacial Surgery rendered to the rural population in Karnataka which was awarded on the 56^th Independence Day celebrations by the Minister of state for sports, on the 15^th of August 2002.

Currently he is the Professor & Head of the Joint Department of Maxillofacial Surgery at the College of Dental Sciences & SS Institute of Medical Sciences, Davangere. It is interesting to note that with the nature & spectrum of his work, the department has been rechristened as the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial, Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery. He has been given the herculean task of organizing a Craniofacial Unit at this hospital. He also runs the Taulins Center for Craniofacial & Aesthetic Facial Surgery in Davangere.
